Magnesium and Reduced Risk of High Blood Pressure

The FDA has responded to a petition submitted on behalf of The Center for Magnesium Education and Research which requested that the FDA authorize a health claim about the relationship between magnesium consumption and a reduced risk of high blood pressure.

It turns out, the FDA agrees!

“[T]he FDA determined that the totality of the scientific evidence supports a qualified health claim on the relationship between magnesium and a reduced risk of high blood pressure… “Some scientific evidence suggests that diets with adequate magnesium may reduce the risk of high blood pressure (hypertension), a condition associated with many factors. The FDA has concluded that the scientific evidence supporting this claim is inconsistent and not conclusive.” (1)

Magnesium plays an important role in many of the body’s processes including muscle contraction, neurotransmitter release, and energy production.

Today an increasing number of people are magnesium deficient. In part, this is due to refined/processed foods and their prevalence in the modern diet. The processing and refining of food can considerably reduce it’s magnesium content. “For example, processing wheat to flour or brown rice to polished white rice reduces the Mg[Magnesium] content by approximately 80%” (2).

Who Needs Magnesium?

Possible signs of magnesium deficiency include:

  • Low energy
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Confusion
  • Nervousness
  • Anxiousness
  • Irritability
  • Poor digestion
  • Inability to sleep
  • Muscle tension, spasm and cramps

Groups at high risk of magnesium deficiency:

  • People with gastrointestinal diseases (such as Crohn’s disease and celiac disease)
  • People with type 2 diabetes
  • People with long-term alcoholism
  • Older people
Because magnesium is so ubiquitous, a magnesium deficiency can affect virtually every system of the body.
